Best & Fairest Club Award Nominations

5 Sep 2023 by Michael Shillito

Hi All
As you may know the Best & Fairest is fast approaching on Sept 23rd. Along with the player awards it is critical we acknowledge the efforts of those off the field that give us this great opportunity to be able to play each week.
See below the criteria for the awards. We are seeking nominations for each category with contributions from a broad range of people throughout the club.
If you are able to please email Will Bradley at will.bradley@live.com with you nominations it would be greatly appreciated.

Playing Club Person of the Year
This award is given to a player who has made a significant contribution to the club off the field and who has also held and conducted themselves in a manner that exemplifies a positive, supportive and can-do attitude.

Volunteer of the Year
This award is given to a Volunteer who has made a really significant contribution to the club and who is also a positive and supportive club person.

The Lionel Beale Trophy
Lionel Beale was a stalwart of North Shore who undertook numerous volunteer roles during his long-term involvement with the club. He was a team manager, committee member, timekeeper, keeper of records and just about everything else.
This is a perennial award named in Lionel’s honour to recognise an outstanding contribution made by a young member of the club (typically 21 or under) who is a also positive role model for their peers.

The ‘Doc’ Ludowici Trophy
The Ludowici Trophy is a new perennial award that recognises individuals who have made a significant contribution to the club through their on field efforts.
Stuart ‘Doc’ Ludowici joined North Shore as a 16 year old in the late 1960’s and to play under 19’s and went on to a lengthy playing career that also saw him play in Premier Division. While playing, Stuart studied medicine and went on to have a successful career as a medical professional.
When his playing days were finished Stuart gave back to the club by coaching under 19’s and seniors and also used his medical training to volunteer as the club doctor over a period that spanned decades. The Doc’s selfless on field contribution spanned more than 30 years and it’s this type of selfless contribution that Ludowici Trophy recognises.

The Spirit Cup (Swan – Aynsley Trophy)
The Spirit Cup (Swan – Aynsley Trophy) can be awarded to anyone associated with the club including, players, coaches, managers, volunteers and supporters.
The Spirit Cup, or the Swan – Aynsley Trophy is a major perennial award that is named in honour of Victoria Swan and Tom Aynsley.
Tori was a larger-than-life character who was a foundation player in our women’s program and a key part of our early leadership. Tom was a wonderful, socially engaged young man who loved his footy and had worked work his way through to Premier Division. Very sadly, Tori and Tom both passed away suddenly at just 26 and 24 respectively. Tom in 2017 and Tori in 2018.
It was a shock to the club and to everyone who knew them to suddenly lose these two vibrant young people. So to commemorate them and also to provide an ongoing reminder that life and footy are to be lived and enjoyed, because neither are a given, we award the Spirit Cup (or Swan – Aynsley Trophy) each year to people who have displayed outstanding enthusiasm and positivity in making a significant contribution to our club – in the way that Tori and Tom would have if they were still with us.
